【時事英語】4G「吃到飽」退場倒數！超實用的電信英文用語一次學！

瞎毀！手機網路即將不再「吃到飽」！「吃到飽」、「資費」、「網路流量」等流行實用英文的你會說嗎？

「4G 吃到飽」：unlimited 4G data plan

中文裡「吃到飽」原指食物無限取用的餐廳，英文稱為 “(all-you-can-eat) buffet“，後來也沿用到其他無限量供給的服務上；

但同樣是「吃到飽」，去電信門市時，千萬別和服務人員說你要 buffet，

手機吃到飽資費要用 “unlimited 4G data plan“。
例：The latest unlimited 4G data plan offered by C&C Telecom sounds more reasonable than the one offered the its competitor.
（C&C 公司最新推出的吃到飽聽起來比同業競爭對手的更合理。）

「電信業者」：telecom carrier

telecom 是 telecommunication 的縮寫，指「電信」，

tele- 有「遠距」的意思，

如 teleconferencing（遠距會議）、

telecommuting（遠端辦公）、

telegram（電報）。
carrier 可以表示「運輸工具」；「航空公司」，但也常拿來表示「電信業者」與「保險業者」（insurance carrier）！
例：The telecom carrier I’m subscribing to now has lousy connection service

which is why I’m thinking of changing carrier when my subscription ends this month.
（我現在用的電信公司網路超不順，所以我想這個月約滿後要換一家電信業者。）

• 「資費」：telecom charges
  
  

「資費」指電信收費方案，由於英文中「收費」、「費用」常用 charge 表示，

如 admission charges（入場費）、

gas charges（瓦斯費）、

handling charges（手續費），

所以「電信資費」自然就是 telecom charges。

例：My monthly phone statement shows telecom charges that I can’t fathom and amounting to a lot of money, too.
（我的電話帳單上的電信費簡直是天文數字，令我無法想像。）

• 「網路流量」: Network traffic
  

  • 

「流量」指網路裡的資料傳輸狀況，並不會流動所以不能用「flow」。

在表示「流量」時，有點類似交通流量的概念，比較適合用 traffic 這個單字，

如果是在討論網站，就是指該網站的「造訪人次數目」；

另外，「網路流量塞車」，如同交通「塞車」，

可以用 network congestion 表示網路傳輸不順暢的狀況。
例：The malicious software is using a lot of resources,

thus slowing down the network due to traffic.
（這個有害軟體使用超多資源還使網路流量超載。）

• 「基地台」：base station

  
  

許多人避之為恐不及的「基地台」，英文是 base station；

另外，再台灣即使在外頭，也有許多「熱點」可以無線上網，

這些「熱點」英文就叫作 “hotspot“。

1. 「我的電腦當機」的英文?
(X) My computer is broken.
(O) My computer crashed.
其中的crash v. = 當機；沒錯就是和plane/car crash (飛機墜毀/車子撞毀)同一個字啦~
crash當作「當機」的用法:
I hate it when my computer crashes when you're in the middle of something!!
= 我最討厭電腦用到一半徑然給我當~機~惹~~~~~~

2. 「閃退」的英文?
crash unexpectedly
suddenly crash
例句:
This new app keeps crashing unexpectedly. I'm so frustrated!!
= 這個新的app一直閃退，我超崩~潰~DER!!!

3. 「記憶體已滿」的英文?
My cellphone memory/storage is full...AGAIN!
= 我手機記憶體又滿了啦~~

4. 猜猜看butt/pocket-dial是甚麼意思? 蛤?屁屁撥號??
答案: 手機放在屁股的口袋，不小心撥號出去
例句:
I accidentally butt-dialed my ex! Awkward...
